MAYFAIR (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are searching for a man who stole a car with a young boy in the back seat.

It happened around 9 p.m. Monday along the 6400 block of Frankford Avenue in Mayfair.

Police say a woman exited her 2013 Nissan to use the ATM and left the car running with her 6-year-old son in the back seat.

While she was at the ATM, police say a man jumped in the car and took off.

A mother and her young son were reunited after a harrowing ordeal in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia.

Audrey Lockton was out with a friend when they heard screams coming from a Wells Fargo parking lot.

"She said, 'He took my baby! He took my baby!" she recalled.

Sean MaCartney saw it happen and gave chase until the thief pulled over after a few blocks.

"I'm sure he looked in the rear view mirror and saw the boy, pulled over, and bailed out. We got the boy back to his mom, she's shaken but everything ended well," MaCartney said.

The suspect abandoned the car - with the boy - along the 6500 block of Charles Street.

Police say the boy appeared unharmed.

They say the man got away with the woman's purse.

Police say several surveillance cameras along Charles Street captured clear video of the suspect as he fled on foot.

He is likely to face car theft and kidnapping charges once captured.
