CHESTER, Pa. (WPVI) -- A young man was shot and killed in front of his mother inside a Chester, Delaware County, apartment early Sunday morning.

It happened shortly after midnight in the 2100 block of 3rd Street.

Police say several suspects barged into the apartment where a 20-year-old man was inside along with his mother.

One of the suspects shot the man several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His mother was not injured.

Neighbors tell Action News the young man was a leader in the community who gave haircuts to those who couldn't afford them.

Neighbor Terry Covington says this sadly happens too often.

"It's bad around here. As far as the killings and the guns, it's real bad, besides that, the drugs. We have to keep a close eye on (our kids), try to keep them together, keep them in sports, keep them out of trouble going to school," Covington said.

He spoke with us this morning as he was heading to church with his grandchildren.

Covington says he does everything he can to keep the kids away from something like this.

"Living here it's rough man. It ain't easy, plus there ain't no jobs, nothing for kids to do around here," said Covington.

The suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made so far.

No word on a motive for the shooting.
